From May to September, Gozo is alive with a series of street parties that celebrate the patron saints of each village. These village feasts, known as festi, are a sight to behold and last for around three days, sometimes even a week. The locals dress up in their patron's colours and flock to the village centre to join in the festivities. There are ten feasts in total, and they usually fall over a weekend, starting on a Friday with a March and culminating in the celebration of the official patron saint day on Sunday. The feasts end with an awe-inspiring fireworks display that leaves everyone breathless.
Before the 16th century, these events were held inside the churches. However, when Malta was ruled by the Knights of St John, Grandmaster De Rohan, who was known for his love of parties, transformed these events into a celebration of food, music, and dance outside of the churches and onto the streets. Even today, the competition between towns is fierce, with each trying to outdo the other. You can always tell which town has just had their festa by looking for confetti on the streets.
Meanwhile, the next town is busy preparing for their own celebration by assembling flags, lights, and statues. The town's churches are covered with festoon lighting, banners, and flags, and the decorations adorn the centre of town. The personality of each town is clearly demonstrated by its vibrant and colourful decor and lively atmosphere. It truly is a remarkable experience.
